Front Load Dryers & a Thumping Noise
- While some larger or busier households may find that the dryer is in almost daily operation, other households may use the dryer on a less regular basis. If this happens, the rollers in the dryer flatten slightly at points of pressure because they are not moving frequently. This flat spot will create a thump when the dryer is used again. The sound will go away within a few minutes.
- One of the most common reasons a front load dryer might make a thumping sound is an overloaded drum. When too many items are placed in the dryer, the airflow is limited and cannot pass easily through the items, which means that wet items thump around together. In addition, when the drum is too full, items are more likely to get tangled together and create a thump as the balled-up pieces toss around the dryer.
- Thumping may also occur if the dryer is rocking back and forth during use. While this may also be a symptom of an over-filled dryer drum, it may indicate the dryer feet are not level. Look at each of the dryer feet and make adjustments so each foot is in even and in firm contact with the flooring. Some dryers also have rubber pads that can be placed on the feet to reduce vibration and noise.
- As with many other types of appliances, a dryer may start making loud sounds if the parts are getting old, worn out or need replacement. If the rollers, glides or idler pulley are to blame, the thumping noise will not get better even after troubleshooting steps have been performed. If this happens, contact a dryer service repair center for assistance.
