How to Sanitize a Water Container

    • 1). Choose containers such as plastic two-liter soda bottles to store your water supply.

    • 2). Wash each container and its cap, using hot soapy water and shaking vigorously to clean all interior surfaces.

    • 3). Rinse each bottle several times until the rinse water is clear of all soap suds.

    • 4). Add 1 tsp. chlorine bleach and one quart of water to each bottle, shaking gently to mix the fluids.

    • 5). Swish the chlorine solution around the bottle, making sure to cover all inside surfaces with the sanitizer.

    • 6). Empty the bottle of sanitizing chlorine solution, remembering to pour the solution onto the bottle caps as you pour it out of the bottles.

    • 7). Rinse each bottle and cap once more; they are now ready to fill with clean, drinkable water.
