How to Get Big Chunks of Moss Off a Roof
- 1). Choose a sunny day and wait for the sun to dry the moss as much as possible. For areas that never receive direct sunlight, wait for several days of warm, dry weather before proceeding.
- 2). Wear rubber-soled shoes that will grip the shingles. Moss is slippery and the risk of falling is especially great on a slanted roof.
- 3). Firmly plant a ladder at a safe location on the ground. The top of the ladder should extend past the bottom of the roof to make getting on and off easy.
- 4). Cover shrubs with plastic to protect them from the cleaning solution running off the roof. Place a bucket under gutters to collect run-off that empties onto grass.
- 1). Select a garden tool with a long handle and flat base. A flat spade or scraper will work well to slip under large chunks of moss and remove them.
- 2). Place the scraper between the moss and the shingles, being careful to not put too much stress on the shingles. Start at the top and remove the moss from the top down, this will prevent the scraper from accidentally being pushed under the shingles.
- 3). Mix equal parts of water and non-toxic oxygen bleach in a spray bottle. Squirt the solution over the area where the chunks of moss have been removed. Allow the solution to penetrate for 20 minutes and lightly scrub the shingles using a stiff brush.
- 4). Rinse the area with a garden hose to remove the moss and the bleach solution. Rinse from the top down to prevent water from seeping underneath the shingles.
- 5). Examine the gutters and remove all the moss that collected from the run-off. Scoop up the debris and dispose of in a garbage bag. Rinse the gutter with the garden hose.
