Cleaning Wool Carpet
- Remove furniture and vacuum entire carpet in two directions to remove as much loose soil as possible. Vacuuming also lifts compressed fibers, allowing the cleaning solution to clean the fibers more thoroughly.
- Make a cleaning solution by mixing 2 tbsp. liquid dish soap or laundry detergent in 1 gallon of warm water. The dyes and colorants used for wool carpet are often natural, and a gentle cleaning solution, such as dish soap or laundry detergent, should be used to maintain the vibrancy of the colors in the carpet.
- Use a carpet cleaning machine to wash the carpet. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to operate your specific machine.
After washing, go back over the carpet slowly with suction only to remove as much of the wash water as possible. - Dry thoroughly. Carpet will dry more quickly by using a ceiling or floor fan.
Wash carpets when there is low relative humidity so the carpet will dry more quickly.
Dry the carpet thoroughly before placing furniture back on the carpet to avoid mold and mildew growth.
