Homemade Rug Shampoo Cleaner

    • 1). Fill a tea kettle with water and heat until boiling. Measure out one pint of the boiling water into a bowl and add 1/2 c. liquid dishwashing detergent and 2 tbsp. white vinegar (optional; may lighten some carpets). Mix well.

    • 2). Let the water, vinegar and detergent mixture cool until it reaches a jelly-like consistency. Whip briskly until stiff and frothy with a mixer or, if you're feeling energetic, use a whisk, egg beater or fork.

    • 3). Vacuum the carpet thoroughly. Apply your homemade rug shampoo to any stained areas, scrubbing briskly with a soft brush. Wipe away excess suds with a soft cloth.

    • 4). Allow the scrubbed areas to dry completely, then vacuum again.
