A carpet stain can be a source of stress and aggravation for a homeowner. Unfortunately, stains are bound to happen, especially in a busy family household. A stain doesn't have to be permanent, though. Technology has helped in the battle against stains and there are also some traditional methods that every carpet owner should know about to get rid of stains quickly and cheaply. While many different types of stains exist, these general tips can apply to any kind of stain. - Blotting is important. DO NOT SCRUB! Scrubbing only embeds the stain further into the carpet fibers. Try blotting from the outside of the stain, working towards the middle. This way the blotting will stop the stain from spreading further out. Paper towels or terry towels are good tools for blotting.
- Rubbing alcohol is recommended for use on greasy stains. Plain water will help with water-soluble stains like ketchup or juice. Remember to blot the water or rubbing alcohol and do not rub. Detergent can be used on either stain, but remember to rinse using plain water. Apply the rinse by spraying with a spray bottle. Another solution is made up of one part vinegar and one part water. This can also be sprayed directly onto a stain.
- Carpet stain removers abound on the market. Before applying such a product, test it on an area of the rug that will not be seen by people just in case it damages the carpet fibers. Hydrogen peroxide (3% solution) can also be applied to a tough stain. Let it sit for an hour, then blot to remove and repeat if necessary.
- Gum can easily be removed by freezing it first. Apply an ice cube or ice pack directly to the gum. Wait until it is frozen, then break it apart by hitting it. Quickly pick up the shattered pieces before they soften into the rug again. Red wine stains can be treated with white wine, then blotted clean. Apply some club soda or carpet cleaner after the white wine to further clean the stain.
- Urine can be removed by spraying a vinegar solution directly onto the affected area. A solution of one part white vinegar to one part water is recommended. After the vinegar is blotted, apply detergent mixed with water, then blot dry again.
