How to Seal a Cement Patio
- 1). Clear the patio of all patio furniture, potted plants, barbecue grills, door mats and toys. Sweep the surface with a stiff-bristle broom to get rid of leaves, dust and dirt.
- 2). Scrub the patio with a mild detergent using the broom to loosen stubborn grease, oil stains or mildew. Use a power washer to rinse away the dirt and suds. Allow the surface to dry.
- 3). Inspect the patio for cracks. Fill in any cracks with a cement sealant using a caulking gun. Smooth the sealant and blend it into the surrounding surface with a putty knife.
- 4). Stir the sealer to ensure it is thoroughly mixed. Do not shake it as this causes air bubbles that can interfere with the finish.
- 5). Follow the manufacturer's instructions and roll on a thin, even coat of sealer. Use a medium-nap roller and have another person go behind with a soft-bristle brush. This helps to work the sealer into the pores of the concrete and spread out any pooled areas. Allow the surface to dry and then apply a second coat using the same technique.
- 6). Avoid walking on the newly-sealed patio for 36 to 48 hours.
