- 1). Determine if there is a musty odor or an earthy smell coming from areas of the house. The musty odor is usually the first sign that indicates the presence of mold.
- 2). Look for visible signs of mold in areas such as underneath carpets, wallpaper, walls and cabinets. Mold can also be present on surfaces such as walls and wood. Mold may appear as furry, dark patches that generally increases in size.
- 3). Test for the presence of mold by using a mold test kit. Some kits require that you take a sample of a particle or dust and mail it into them for testing. They will test the sample in a lab to determine if you have mold in your home as well as determine the type of mold. You can purchase a mold test kit from a home improvement store or online. Use a piece of clear tape and tape it onto the area where you suspect the mold is. Place the tape inside the zip bag and follow the mailing instructions that came with the kit.
