How Do I Clean Up Mold on My Windows & Under My House?

    • 1). Contact a plumber to inspect a home, especially areas under the house such as basements and crawl spaces, where mold is present. Leaky pipes may be the cause of excess moisture in these areas. Make any recommended repairs to prevent mold from returning.

    • 2). Wear safety goggles, gloves and a particle mask before entering a mold infested area. Remove any curtains, cushions, carpet and soft materials located under the house or around windows. Mold growth on these surfaces does not respond to cleaning. Bag up the items in durable trash bags and dispose of moldy items immediately.

    • 3). Use sandpaper to sand off mold growth on wooden window sills and building studs located under the home.

    • 4). Mix 1 gallon of water and ½ cup of bleach in large buckets. Scrub plastic, wooden, glass and metal surfaces including widows, sashes, sills and structural studs. Allow the bleach solution to sit on the surfaces for 15 minutes.

    • 5). Rinse the entire area with clean water. Apply a coat of a borax-based laundry detergent with a clean rag to windows and surfaces. This solution helps prevent mold growth from returning, according to the Washington State Department of Health.

    • 6). Set up fans and dehumidifiers to help dry the space quickly and efficiently.
