How to Touch Up Paint Above Molding
- 1). Search your garage and other storage areas to see if you can find a can of the same paint you used on the walls. If not, you will need to find a swatch that resembles the existing color as closely as possible and purchase new paint.
- 2). Apply painters tape along the top edge of the nearby molding to protect it from paint spills and drips. Make sure the surface of the molding is clean and dry before placing the tape, sticky side down, along the top of the molding. Check to see that the tape sits straight against the edge of the wall, and then press it firmly onto the molding.
- 3). Dip your brush into a shellac-based sealer and apply it directly to the surface of the wall that needs a touch-up. This step need only be followed if you are touching up the wall as a result of a stain; shellac sealants will prevent the stain from showing through the new coat of paint.
- 4). Stir the paint thoroughly with a paint stick and use a brush to touch up the required area. Carefully cover the area with paint from your brush until it is covered. If the area to be touched up is large, use a roller to complete the painting process.
- 5). Allow the paint to dry and then check the wall to make sure the touch-up is invisible. If not, you might need to add a few layers of paint to match the color. When the paint job is complete, remove the painter's tape from the molding by slowly peeling it off.
