The Best Way to Clean a Shower Curtain

    Washing Machine and Bleach

    • The best way to get your shower curtain clean if you've got just a bit of time, is to put the shower curtain into the washing machine. Wash the shower curtain with several dirty towels or a blanket, add 1 cup of bleach, and one cup of detergent. Run the gentle cycle on the washer and use either warm or hot water. Immediately after the washer's spin cycle, take out the shower curtain, and place back on the shower rod in the bath. The shower curtain will drip dry, and after a few showers all of the remaining wrinkles in the curtain will ease out.
If you have even less time, the best way is to mix some bleach with water in a spray bottle, and spray the dirty shower curtain from top to bottom. This is a quick fix, and will take care of the problem until you have time to wash the curtain.

    Choose Different Soap

    • The best way to keep a shower curtain clean may require a change in soap. Typical bar soap creates a lot of soap scum when combined with water and dirty bodies. If you have hard water, the problem can be even worse. Try switching to a body wash, or bath gel, for less impact on your shower curtain. These products usually leave less residue on your body as well as the shower curtain.

    Baking Soda and Vinegar

    • The best way to clean your curtain, if you want to use natural products, uses baking soda. Take down the shower curtain, and toss it into the washing machine with 1 cup of baking soda. Wash in one complete wash cycle in hot or warm water. Check the washing instructions on the label to make sure this will not damage the fabric of your shower curtain.
You can also clean soap scum off of your shower curtain with vinegar. Put the shower curtain into the washer with several large towels. Add your normal detergent with 1 cup of vinegar. Wash on the gentle cycle. Take the shower curtain out after the spin cycle in the wash, and hang back up in the bathroom to dry.
