The Best Solutions for Cleaning Windows

    Ammonia

    • Ammonia is the prime active ingredient in many commercial glass cleaners, but you can harness its power without adding all of the extra chemicals found in some of these products. A report from the University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension recommends mixing 2 quarts of water and 2 tbsp. of ammonia. Ammonia is very strong, so you will not need much. Just mix the solution inside of a spray bottle and spray your dirty windows and wipe off with a clean cloth.

    Borax

    • Borax is a crystallized cleaning compound available in grocery and home improvement stores. You can make a safe, all-natural window cleaner by mixing 2 tbsp. of borax with 2 cups of water, according to the green nonprofit Eco-Cycle. Borax cleans and disinfects, so it can prove especially useful if you have mildew or mold on your window.

    White Vinegar

    • In addition to borax, white vinegar also cleans and disinfects using only eco-friendly, natural properties. Reader's Digest recommends mixing 2 parts water with 1 part white vinegar. Add 1 or 2 drops of dish detergent for an even stronger window cleaner. Just do not mix vinegar with ammonia, and do not spray vinegar on any window where you recently sprayed ammonia or an ammonia-based product. This may result in the release of harmful fumes.

    Rubbing Alcohol

    • Rubbing alcohol not only cleans windows but also prevents frost from forming, which can serve you well if you live in a frigid environment. Mix 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol with 1 quart of water and spray your windows. Afterward, Reader's Digest recommends wiping down the window with newspaper to make it shine. You can also 1 tbsp. of ammonia for improved effectiveness. While ammonia will react badly with bleach or vinegar, it can mix safely with rubbing alcohol.
