      Casein is a protein found in milk. Casein-free diets are rapidly growing in popularity throughout America. The trend of eating casein-free foods started with people who had digestive disorders such as celiac disease. Along with helping people with celiac disease, the casein-free diet has been shown to help people who suffer from ADD and autism. Many people have damaged and weakened digestive systems, a condition that makes digesting foods with casein difficult. Fortunately, many natural and unrefined foods are casein free.

    Fruits and Vegetables

      Fresh fruits such as apples, bananas and strawberries are casein free and contain no wheat. Along with being casein free, fruits are full of antioxidants, which help fight diseases. Vegetables that are casein free include artichokes, asparagus and potatoes. Harvard School of Public Health suggests eating a variety of fruits and vegetables that are different in color to give the body the mix of nutrients it requires. Dark, leafy greens and any vegetable that is orange, red or yellow are the healthiest choices.

    Eggs, Fish and Poultry

    • Fresh meat and seafood are casein free. However, prepackaged meats are not casein free due to preservatives. Casein-free proteins include soups, such as beef stew and chicken noodle soup. Canned salmon and sardines make a fast lunch full of protein. Pastrami, chicken salad, hamburgers, tuna and eggs are all casein free and excellent forms of protein. Avoid creamy sauces and seasoning, since many can contain casein. Use garlic, lemon juice, olive oil and sea salt for seasoning, and if you're building a sandwich or making a side of toast, choose sourdough bread with no butter.

      Nuts are ideal in a wheat-free diet because they can add fiber, flavor and protein to casein-free foods. Examples of casein-free nuts include almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, pecans and pistachios. Mix the nuts into food, or eat them alone as a snack. Nuts can be used to produce milk or as an substitute for cow's milk. Almond milk is used for cooking, cereal and for drinking. Plant-based oils, such as canola and olive oil, are casein free and used for baking and grilling.

    Condiments and Seasonings

    • Condiments such as horseradish, ketchup, maple syrup, olives and mustard do not contain casein and can be used freely. Mayonnaise, vegetable oil and dressings without grains can be used atop salads. Use natural herbs without additives, for example, brewer's yeast, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, monosodium glutamate, graham flour and textured vegetable protein. Stay away from cheese unless you buy it from a health food store that guarantees it's casein free and made fresh with no additives.
