- 1). Place a piece of at least day-old bread made without preservatives on a flat surface.
- 2). Use a cotton swab to collect surface dirt from the ground or countertop. Rub the soiled end of the swab over the surface of the bread.
- 3). Drizzle a few drops of warm water on the surface of the bread.
- 4). Place the bread in a resealable plastic bag and seal it closed.
- 5). Place the bag in warm, dark place, such as cupboard or drawer that is not going to be opened for a couple of days. Use an old food container, such as a milk or juice carton, and place the bag inside. Seal the carton with adhesive tape.
- 6). Leave the bread alone for at least 24 hours before checking for mold growth. It might take up to 48 hours, depending on conditions, such as humidity.
