- The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development program offers grants and guaranteed loans to help rural communities install and maintain sewer systems. These funds can be used to pay for technical assistance, construction, equipment, community education and legal costs.
- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers additional loans and grants to help with rural sewer systems. The EPA provides funding to states through the Clean Water State Revolving Fund program to assist states in financing loans to complete rural waste water projects. Additional funding for economically-depressed rural areas can be obtained through the EPA Hardship Grant program.
- In addition to the federal programs, state governments may also offer grants to help rural communities pay for sewer systems. Availability and qualifications for these programs may vary by state.
