The Benefits of Omega-3 for an Unborn Baby

An unborn baby needs many different nutrients from its mother to grow and develop into a healthy child.
Some nutrients promote healthy growth and others reduce the risk of birth defects.

Omega-3 in the form of fish oil supplements have various health benefits, many of which deal with heart health.
Preeclampsia, or high blood pressure in pregnant women, can increase the risk of preterm labor and birth; increasing omega-3 intake and lowering the amount of omega-6 actually reduces the risk of preeclampsia by 46%.
Even if a mother gives preterm birth and is breastfeeding, omega-3 supplements can help the premature baby by increasing mental development.
A study showed that when compared with premature babies that were fed formula or breast milk that wasn't supplemented with omega-3, half of the omega-3 supplemented babies didn't suffer from delayed mental development.
