1960s Costumes for Men

    • Everyone has seen the cliched costumes that are usually associated with the 1960s, such as the Woodstock hippie or Neil Armstrong Astronaut. Dig a little bit deeper and look at other male figures from the era. The music, sports and politics defined a generation with images and figures that are unforgettable even today.

    • Nothing signifies the 1960s as much as the music that came out of the decade. The Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix are all great choices. But the Beatles are the most recognizable name in rock music. Each Beatle had a unique style from from the early '60s suits and ties, to Sgt. Pepper suits or turning hippie.

Each Beatles also had his own signature instrument. Study old videos and look for a cheap toy guitar that's appropriate to whatever Beatle your costume represents, or make one out of cardboard. Just make sure that you don't forget the floppy hair.

    • John Kennedy's presidency defined a generation. Always well groomed and well dressed, JFK was a brand all to himself. Whether he was wearing a well tailored suit or strutting around in a polo, JFK was all American. Pick up a thick Bostonian accent and have your lady dress as either Marilyn Monroe or as Jackie Kennedy.

    • The '60s were a time of love and peace, and also a time when governments were sweating bullets over pushing "the button". No one typifies that period like Fidel Castro. This year you could be the bad guy. Find a plain green military suit, an army hat and slap on a scruffy beard to match Castro's signature look.

    • Joe Namath guaranteed that his New York Jets would win Superbowl III even though they were huge underdogs against the Baltimore Colts. Namath and the Jets won, cementing his legacy. Broadway Joe is an iconic figure. Wear the number his 12 jersey, helmet and pads for the basic look. If you want to add a bit more spice, try a pair of satin shorts and some pantyhose like he wore in his now famous commercial. Grow the Namath mustache for even better results.

    • Another sports star that from the 1960s is Roger Maris, who hit 61 home runs for the New York Yankees in 1961. Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa all hit more, while on supposedly using performance enhancing drugs. Put on your Yankee uniform and carry a sign that says, "I didn't cheat 61*". Don't forget the asterisk.
