Why I Love the Christmas Holiday

I can't lie, when it comes to Christmas I am a fanatic.
When I was younger all I cared about was what gifts I was going to get and how many gifts I could get.
Everything else about the holiday was of little significance to me and my main purpose was getting, not exchanging gifts.
Whether it was the first Nintendo, the full Voltron set or the newest pair of Jordan sneakers, Christmas was all about my Christmas list and getting everything off of it.
However, now that I'm a grown man the holiday holds a much deeper significance for me.
You see, when I was younger I never realized how hard it was to get the entire family together for the holidays and spread good cheer amongst one another.
Yeah, I saw my uncle's and aunties and cousins during that time of year but my cousins and I just ran around, play fighting and showing off our newest gifts.
Now that I'm an uncle and a father with my own children and nieces and nephews I know how hard it is to plan a gift together and have the entire family there enjoying each other's company.
In the summer time my siblings are vacationing with their families, or the children are in sleep away camp or there is something else which always seems to come up.
Not only that, but some of my siblings live in different parts of the US and traveling can be prohibitive with the rising costs of traveling.
When Christmas rolls around however we all make a concerted effort to get together and do some much needed bonded with one another.
For those of us who are married we can only make it every other year due to needing to spend the holidays with our spouse's families during the alternating years.
Therefore we make sure that we buy our plane tickets early and put in our vacation time way in advance as well.
We make sure that we put the family first and foremost and we sincerely enjoy each others time.
I guess the reason why I like the Christmas holiday so much is because it is a time when I know I'll get to see all of my loved ones and reestablish the familial bonds that keep us together.
It's a time when there's no work to do and we all just go to our parents home and reminisce on the good times we've shared in the past.
Watching our children run around and play fight and enjoy all of their gifts really brings me to a time in the past when we exhibited that exact behavior and it always makes me feel good remembering those special times.
