Natural Remedies for Sinus Headaches

    Steamy Showers

    • Nothing clears out your sinuses more than a hot, steamy shower. Close the bathroom door tightly and turn the hot water on and let it run for a little while. Allow for the room to fill up with steam and breathe in and out deeply. You can either enjoy the shower, or just stand outside of it and breathe in the moist steam.

If you can find some menthol shower tablets (which can be ordered from online specialty stores, such as http://www.donnadeesdesigns.com/meshta.html), drop one or two into the bath and allow the air to fill with the menthol vapors. Rub your sinuses with your fingertips to relieve the pressure as you breathe in and out. Spending a good 10 to 15 minutes in the shower while doing this might help to relieve the symptoms of a sinus headache.

    Neti Pots

    • These little devices can be found in your local drug stores for about 7 dollars a piece. They include a saline solution, a plastic neti pot, and some mixers. Basically, you fill the neti pot with warm water, add the saline, and stir. Now comes the tricky part. There's a certain technique that comes with using a neti pot, since you have to pour the water into one nostril so that it flows through your nasal cavity and out of the other nostril. It's not a pretty sight, and it takes a try or two to get it right. But, trust me when I say "Wow!" This will surely clear out your sinuses, which allows you to breathe a little better, and in return will probably lessen your headache.

Don't worry if it sounds a little complicated. All neti pots come with directions, and there are a half million YouTube videos of people using it (which is kind of gross). Once you master the technique, you won't regret your purchase.

    Rest

    • Yes, this seems like a fail safe, but really, sinus headaches can be demobilizing. They can make your whole day come to a halt. If the shower and neti pot do not work, sleeping should do the trick. Just remember to sleep with your head propped up so that your sinuses don't become more backed up. Using a hot water humidifier with menthol tablets might also ease your breathing as you sleep. Keep some water near by, too. Nothing lessens a headache more than some good ol' R&R.
