Hand-Washing Tips

    Make it a Habit

    • The best way to ensure you adopt an effective hand-washing technique is to make it a habit. Every time you use the bathroom, and always before touching food, you should spend two minutes cleaning your hands thoroughly with soap. Linking hand washing to these activities that you are sure to take part in is a good way to ensure you are washing your hands at least four or five times each day.

    Anti-Bacterial is Not Always Necessary

    • A good hand soap will suffice for most hand-washing applications. Opting for extra-strength anti-bacterial soaps and detergents can do more harm than good, as it helps germs resistant to these chemicals outnumber the weaker ones, according to the Mayo Clinic. Reach for the anti-bacterial soap only when you have come in contact with raw meat or other sources of dangerous bacteria.

    Carry Hand Sanitizer

    • Carrying hand sanitizer in your purse, pocket or backpack is a great way to keep your hand-washing habits while out and about. Most hand sanitizers use alcohol to kill bacteria, so choose cost-saving generic brands and use it more often, rather than expensive name brands you may not be apt to use liberally.

    Carry Moist Towelettes

    • Hand sanitizer is great for killing germs, but it does not effectively remove dirt. While moist towelettes are less environmentally friendly, as they produce more waste, using them occasionally is a good way to remove dirt and grime from hands before eating. Carry a package or two in your bag, and you'll be happy you have them.
