Signs & Symptoms of Mold Poisoning

    • Sufferers of mold poisoning may experience headaches and fevers.headache image by Jarek Miarka from Fotolia.com

Exposure to mold mycotoxins is usually accidental, according to microbiologists J.W. Bennett and M. Klich. They also say that mold poisoning "is more likely to occur in parts of the world where poor methods of food handling and storage are common, where malnutrition is a problem, and where few regulations exist to protect exposed populations." Despite the circumstances that cause mold poisoning, its level of toxicity and how much a person is exposed to will influence how mold poisoning might affect you.

    Ergotism

    • Ergot is a fungal species that replaces seeds or kernels during an infestation. The victims of exposure to toxic levels of ergot experience hallucinations and intense burning sensations. Other symptoms include blindness, convulsions, twitching and drowsiness. Ergotism is not a public health concern. The toxins that cause these symptoms are beaten by hygienic agricultural practices. However, the World Health Organization continues to recognize its potential threat. When humidity and economic problems mix, poor agricultural practices can lead to an ergotism epidemic.

    Aflatoxicosis

    • Consumption of alfatoxins in cereal grains, nuts or rice results in a variety of symptoms. Sufferers around the world experience fevers, headaches, abdominal pain, vomiting, jaundice, nausea and an accumulation of fluid in the legs or feet. Alfatoxins can also enter the organs. Victims may exhibit signs of acute liver injury and fatal cases of toxic hepatitis. If this mycrotoxin pursues the lungs, respiratory infection symptoms will emerge.

    Ochratoxicosis

    • Ochratoxins are found in molds that grow on coffee beans, cereals and bread. Like those who suffer from alfatoxicosis, exposure to orchatoxins may cause respiratory distress. This form of mold poisoning can also cause symptoms related to chronic internal lesions. A connection between renal failure and orchatoxins exists. So signs of ochratoxin poisoning may include fatigue, pale skin and weight loss.
