How to Sew Christmas Pillowcases

    • 1). Cut a piece of Christmas-themed fabric into a large rectangle measuring 21 inches by 63 inches for a standard size pillow or 21 inches by 83 inches for a king size pillow. Lay the fabric right side up on your work surface.

    • 2). Fold the fabric rectangle in half by bringing the shorter ends of the fabric together with the wrong side of the fabric facing out. Iron the fold to set a crease.

    • 3). Sew a 1/4-inch seam along the entire length of the two longer sides of the folded fabric. These seams create the basic shape of your Christmas pillowcase.

    • 4). Sew a 1/4-inch seam along the folded side of the pillowcase. This will give the pillowcase a crisp and neat appearance when it is finished.

    • 5). Turn the pillowcase right side out. It should now look like a pillowcase with a raw edge of fabric at the open end.

    • 6). Fold in the raw edge at the opening of the pillowcase approximately one inch. Use a hot iron to set the crease as you fold so that it stays folded.

    • 7). Sew a seam approximately 1/2 inch away from the folded edge of the opening of the pillowcase. Sew all the way around the opening so that the raw edge of the fabric is secured to the inside of the pillowcase.

    • 8). Fold the fabric in two inches and set the fold with a hot iron. This will completely encase the raw edge of the fabric inside the pillowcase so that it cannot be seen or start to fray due to normal wear and tear.

    • 9). Sew another seam approximately 1 3/4 inches from the folded edge of the pillow with thread of a complimentary color to your Christmas fabric, as this seam will be visible on the finished pillowcase.

Cut Christmas decorations from felt such as holly leaves and berries, Christmas ornaments or Christmas trees. The felt will allow you to decorate your Christmas pillowcase without making it uncomfortable to sleep on.

Hand sew the felt decorations to your Christmas pillowcase with colorful embroidery floss using a whip stitch (see Resources). Be careful to only sew the decorations to one side of the pillow to avoid sewing the pillowcase shut.
