Mildew & Disease

    Allergic Reaction

    • Excess mildew spores can trigger an allergic reaction in individuals. Increased exposure to mildew increases an individual's sensitivity to mildew. Mildew allergy is also common among people who are allergic to pollen or animal dander, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Allergic reactions include asthma, respiratory problems, throat irritation, congestion and sneezing.

    Infections

    • Those with weak immune systems are more susceptible to infections from exposure to mildew. They may suffer from aspergillosis of the lungs. This infection develops when a person inhales mildew spores, and the spores begin to grow in the lungs, according to the Health and Energy Company. Vulnerable individuals may also include children, the elderly and pregnant women.

    Airborne Irritation

    • Certain varieties of mildew spores release gas as part of their metabolic process. These gases may contain arsenic pigments, which cause membrane irritation in sensitive individuals, according to Toxic Mold and Tort News. The effects of this irritation are itching, burning, the inability to concentrate and a longer reflex time.

    Asthma Complications

    • Americans spend 90 percent of their time indoors, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Because of this, indoor allergens play a large part in sparking asthma attacks among the one in 10 Americans that suffer from allergy-related asthma. Those with asthma are particularly susceptible to asthma attacks, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

    Mildew Odors

    • Some people may demonstrate a reaction to the strong smell of mildew. This is most commonly displayed in poorly ventilated areas where mildew is growing, such as crawlspaces or basements. Effects may include headaches, vomiting or a stuffy nose, according to Toxic Mold and Tort News.
