WordWorld Theme for a Birthday

    Invitations

    • Handmade WordWorld party invites can be made from colored card-stock. Using a stencil for large bubble-type lettering, write the word "Party" on the card-stock. Cut out the block of letters, and use a marker to highlight each individual letter to form a word that resembles the words on the show. You can provide the party details on the back of the invite.

Alternatively, invitations can be crafted by the birthday child out of pieces of card-stock that he has decorated with alphabet letters using stickers, a rubber stamp or hand-drawn images. The party details should appear on the opposite side.

    Decorations

    • Mix and match store-bought WordWorld decorations with solid-colored party goods in the show's primary colors of orange, green, purple, red and yellow. WordWorld-themed tableware should depict the WordFriends.

In addition to WordWorld-themed party goods, create handmade items to decorate the space. Custom placemats serve as both a table decoration and a party favor for each guest and are made by cutting the first letter of each name out of poster board and then laminating them. Alphabet garland can be made by cutting letters out of construction paper and stringing them together with ribbon to hang on the wall or over doorways. Include bubble letters of the birthday child's name in the decor as well.

    Activities

    • Plan some activities that incorporate the show's theme of building words. Scavenger hunts to find the letters in the children's names, relay races to collect letters to build words and coloring pages are all activities that can be customized to the children's ages. Traditional party games like "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" and "Hot Potato" can be adapted to fit the WordWorld party theme by replacing the "Potato" with a cardboard cutout of the word potato and choosing one of the show's characters to have his tail pinned on.

A game that combines letter sorting skills with a scavenger hunt is played by hiding individual letters of the alphabet throughout the party space. Hide two sets of letters, each set in a different color, and divide the kids into two teams. Instruct teams to look for all of the alphabet letters in their designated color and place them in the correct order. For older kids, let them search for or think of items that begin with each letter of the alphabet. For example, "D" is for dog, "S" is for soup and "Z" is for zoo. The first team to finish or to turn in the most answers in a given amount of time wins.

    Food

    • Set up an alphabet buffet, and provide items for the letters of the alphabet such as "C" is for chicken nuggets, "P" is for pizza or "W" is for watermelon. Use your imagination and creativity to come up with foods for as many letters as possible. Arrange the foods in alphabetical order, rather than by food genre. Use small cards to display the corresponding letter for each food on the table.

A WordWorld-themed cake is an appropriate end to this party theme. Another option is to make your own cupcakes, and decorate them with alphabet letters or allow each child to decorate an iced cupcake with her favorite letter using small candies such as chocolate candies, licorice bits or mini-marshmallows.
