- 1). Calculate the area that you need to cover by measuring the length and width and then multiplying them together. For example, if your lawn is 50 feet by 100 feet, your surface area would be 500 square feet.
- 2). Determine the top soil depth that you need. For example, if you are planting a new lawn, you should have about five inches of topsoil depth.
- 3). Convert the depth of top soil that in step two to feet by dividing by 12. For example, five inches would be 5/12 of a foot.
- 4). Multiply your surface area found, in step one, times the depth, found in step three, to calculate the quantity of top soil you need. For example if you need to cover 500 square feet with 5/12 of a foot of top soil, you would need about 208.33 cubic feet of top soil.
