Rate of Growth of Sawtooth Oak Trees
- The sawtooth oak tree, Quercus acutissima, grows especially quickly during its youth. The growth rate is considered to be medium to fast which, according to The Arbor Day Foundation, correlates to between 13 and 24 inches annually for a medium rate and 25 inches or more for fast growth.
- Eventually achieving a height of between 40 and 60 feet with a similar spread, the sawtooth oak achieves its best growth rate with an abundance of sunshine and when planted in acidic, loamy, moist, sandy, clay and well drained soils. It thrives in USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9 and across most of the United States.
- The sawtooth oak is valued for its quick growth rate which allows the tree to begin producing acorns far more quickly than other types of oak. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System reports that the sawtooth oak begins dropping acorns within five to six years, rather than the 25 or more needed by other varieties of oak.
