How to Learn to Fly a Plane in Trinidad

    • 1). Start with getting your medical exam. This is an important because if you are medically unable to fly as per the TTCAA, or the Trinidad Tobago Civilian Aviation Authority, you will have wasted time and money. Once this is accomplished, seek out flight schools. The two main airports, Port of Spain and Scarborough, both have small Fixed Base Operators (FBO) that have the schools to teach flying.

    • 2). Talk to the operators. Ask about pricing, the instructors, the aircraft that they train in and most importantly, if there are packages that you can buy to save money in your schooling. Make sure you look at the planes yourself and interview the instructors before you even step into a plane. You need to find A) a plane that you are comfortable, as in size, speed and range and B) an instructor that you are happy with. Do not be shy in this endeavor. You are paying their salary and you need to be able to ask questions, take the time to learn at your pace and have fun.

    • 3). Start with an introductory lesson. Many times these are free and last 30 minutes. Watch how your instructor operates and make sure he is taking the time to explain things to you. Continue on with lessons and keep asking questions. if you do not understand something, ask for it to be explained another way. Flying is not something that comes naturally. It is a learned skill. Having your own logbook and headsets make it easier if you are moving back and forth from plane to plane. This will keep you organized.

    • 4). Study your private pilot manuals for the written part of your test as you take lessons. Try to take at least 1-2 lessons a week to maintain a proficiency that will allow you to keep learning. You can chair fly at home by sitting in a chair and envisioning you are at the controls of the airplane. Practice the movements and scans that you will use in the cockpit. Practice the maneuvers that you will find on the flying portion of the private pilot test.

    • 5). Take your written exam and fly a few extra flights prior to your private pilot test. Enjoy the scenery that Trinidad provides as you learn to fly. Go on and pass your test and enjoy your new status as an official pilot.
