- Choose a rod that matches the type of fishing you plan to do. A good starting point would be a 5 weight or 6 weight, 8- to 9-foot graphite rod.
- The reel holds the fly line. Match the reel to the rod weight and the line it holds, so look for a reel that holds 5 weight or 6 weight line.
- A good fly fishing line can make a cheaper rod and reel combination cast better. Look for a floating 5 weight or 6 weight double taper line.
- You'll want several different 8- or 9-foot leaders in various strengths and diameters, as well as tippet material.
- Look for stocking foot chest waders and a pair of wading boots without felt soles.
