Common Air Conditioning Problems

    Size

    • Before having an air conditioner installed, make sure the contractor inspects the home size first. A frequent problem is that the system is too small or too large.

    Installation

    • Improper installation of central air conditioning can result in poor air flow and leaking ducts.

    Refrigerant

    • If the air conditioner does not work properly and is low on refrigerant, or Freon, it may have been undercharged when the system was installed. Otherwise the air conditioner may be leaking refrigerant.

    Dirt

    • When filters and coils become dirty, the air conditioner will work poorly. In addition, the compressor or fans may break down.

    Corrosion

    • Corrosion of terminals and wires is a common air conditioning problem.

    Outside Fan

    • If the outside fan stops running, the compressor may overheat and become damaged.

    Frozen Coil

    • A frozen coil usually is a sign of air flow problems, such as a dirty filter or blocked duct work. It also can be caused by low refrigerant.
