How to Install an External Fuel Pump
- 1). Detach the battery cables from the battery with a wrench.
- 2). Open the gas cap to relieve the pressure that has built up inside the fuel system. Siphon out as much gas from the tank as possible into a gas can. Use a funnel to get the fuel into the can to avoid spilling any fuel on the ground.
- 3). Raise the rear portion of the vehicle with a jack and jack stands so you can install the fuel pump easier. Place wheel blocks behind the two front wheels.
- 4). Remove the fuel tank filler tube from the gas tank with a socket wrench. Pull the fuel lines from the top of the fuel pump. You should be able to remove them with your hand, though you might need some pliers if there is any dirt or corrosion around the area where the line meets the fuel pump.
- 1). Loosen the screws holding the metal fuel tank straps around the fuel tank, then pull the straps away. Gently lower the fuel tank to the ground and look for any signs of damage or corrosion.
- 2). Drag the tank out from underneath the vehicle. Loosen the locking ring that keeps the fuel pump attached to the gas tank with a hammer and brass punch. Use a brass punch so you do not inadvertently create a spark with the hammer.
- 3). Remove the fuel pump locking ring and pull the fuel pump and strainer from the gas tank. Use towels to wipe around the area where the locking ring sits to clean it. Gently place the new fuel pump into the gas tank and put the locking ring back around the top of the pump.
- 1). Reattach the fuel tank back to the vehicle by placing the metal straps around it. Attach the fuel lines back to the top of the fuel pump and connect the fuel tank filler tube back to the tank.
- 2). Lower the rear portion of the car, remove the wheel blocks behind the front two wheels, and pour the gasoline back into the tank from the gas can. Reconnect the battery cables to the battery.
- 3). Turn the vehicle back on to test out the new pump. Look for fuel leaks underneath the gas tank.
