- California has hunting opportunities for a wide range of large wild game, including deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, bear, wild pig and bighorn sheep. The small game category covers pheasant, quail, chukar, grouse, ptarmigan, wild turkey, dove, squirrel, rabbit and hare. Geese, duck, coot, moorhen and black Brant birds also are hunted.
- Freshwater fishing in rivers, lakes and inland streams can be done in California as well as ocean sport fishing in the Pacific Ocean. Freshwater trout and Pacific halibut are favorites among anglers. Shellfish such as dungeness crab are highly prized.
- You must have appropriate licenses, permits, stamps and tags to be in compliance with DFG regulations. These are available online, through a DFG office or authorized agent. The Fish and Game warden for each region enforces applicable regulations and encourages public anonymous tips that lead to the arrest of poachers.
