How Do I Access the Motor in a Canister Vacuum?

- 1). Unplug the electrical cord of the canister vacuum from the power supply before accessing the motor. Remove the hoses from the canister, detaching them by hand.
- 2). Open the top of the canister. Remove the filter and bag from inside the vacuum by pressing in on the tabs to release the parts. Set them out of the way.
- 3). Locate the metal cover near the front of the canister. Unfasten the screws holding the cover in place with a screwdriver. Remove the metal cover from the vacuum.
- 4). Detach the switch plate on top of the motor. Remove the screws with a screwdriver.
- 5). Move the switch assembly out of the way. Take the cover plate off with a screwdriver to gain access to the motor.
