- 1). Place the handle into the bench vise so it is horizontal to the bench. Add the wood glue to the narrow end of the handle, down about three inches on the shaft.
- 2). Add glue to the inside of the gaff-hook tip. Insert it on the glued end of the handle. Let the glue dry.
- 3). Drill three holes into the gaff-tip cover and the handle, then screw one wood screw into the handle for each hole. Use small screws and make sure the heads get flush with the gaff tip cover.
- 4). Drill a 1/3 -inch hole at the base of the handle, up at least three inches from the bottom.
- 5). Thread the leather strap through the hole and tie it so it makes a loop. Tie the marine rope to the strap to make a retrievable rope on the end of the halibut gaff-hook (or harpoon if you prefer.)
