How to Troubleshoot a Goodman Furnace Model # GMPNO80-4

    • 1). Disconnect power to the Goodman furnace, if the furnace has turned off unexpectedly. Wait 30 seconds and restore power. Reset or replace the circuit breaker or fuse as necessary.

    • 2). Let the furnace operate for at least five minutes, then loosen the air shutter locking screws on the front access panel, if the pilot light seems yellow or has a yellow tip. Close the shutter until the flames disappear briefly, then slowly reopen the shutter and tighten the locking screws.

    • 3). Turn off power and remove the air filter if the furnace is not operating well, is noisy or heating inconsistently. Look at the side of the filter and discard if the filter states “Disposable,” then replace with a new filter. Clean off filters marked “Permanent” with soapy water and a soft brush, then rinse and air dry thoroughly. Place the filter in the furnace once dry.

    • 4). Clean around the perimeter air holes and the outside of the circulating motor, if the furnace is overheating or operating constantly. Use a clean, dry cloth and remove dirt and dust from the areas around the filter.

    • 5). Keep the area around the furnace clear of obstructions, furniture and fabric, if the furnace does not seem to be heating as well. Open all return air vents in the home and ensure objects are not placed on top or near vents.

    • 6). Clean the drain system, if the drain seems clogged. Disconnect power first, then disconnect and empty the drain pan and clean out the drain. Reconnect and restore power.

    • 7). Look at the ductwork and furnace connections and tighten as necessary, if the furnace is very noisy during operation or seems to rattle during use. Dust off furnace parts to remove dirt that might affect blower speed.
