The art of flower arranging is both creative and fulfilling. Flower arranging can be a lifelong hobby, or a lucrative career. There are numerous ways to learn this artistic skill: you can study books, get a job at a flower shop or practice on your own. Another way to learn floral design is to take part in a class or program. Many schools, communities and organizations offer programs in flower arranging. - Many communities have adult education programs featuring a broad assortment of classes, including everything from computer programming to singing. Floral design classes are often included among the offerings. Contact your chamber of commerce to find out if your community offers an adult education program, and if any classes in flower arranging are on the schedule.
- Many communities have recreation centers where a multitude of classes are offered. These classes are usually tailored to be suitable to a variety of age groups, from young children to seniors. Check with your community's recreation center to see if any flower arranging classes are offered.
- Some colleges and trade schools offer certificate courses in floral design. Upon successful completion of these courses, you receive a floral design certificate. Such certificates, however, are not required to get a job as a professional florist. These courses are usually comprehensive, and cover a variety of design styles and arrangement types. They are taught by a certified floral designer.
- You can learn floral design via the Internet by enrolling in an online program. Such programs offer step-by-step instruction in flower arranging from a distance. Once you complete one of these programs, you earn a certificate.
- Corporations such as FTD and Teleflora, which play prominent roles in the international floral industry, offer courses in floral design. These courses are usually only open to people who are currently working as professional floral designers at a business that uses either FTD or Teleflora; they are ideal for florists who want to expand their existing skills.
- There are many different styles of floral design, and you may find classes or programs that specialize in just one of them. For example, one class may focus on ikebana, which is traditional Japanese floral arranging; another may be about wedding flowers; yet another may focus on tropical flower arrangements. Choose programs that reflect your own areas of interest.
