- 1). Pull off the spool holder, which is on the bottom of the trimmer and usually twists off and out. Throw out the old spool and any remaining string.
- 2). Clean the trimmer to get rid of any debris, using a cloth or gloves.
- 3). Put the new spool on the trimmer if it is already wound. Pull 2 to 3 inches of string out and place it between the grooves on the spool.
- 4). Place one end of the string tightly in between one of the grooves for replacements that are only string. Wind the string the direction that the spool indicates. The direction will be on the top of the spool. Wind it tightly. Pull 3 to 4 inches of string out and tuck the excess between the unused spool grooves.
- 5). Place the spool holder on the weed trimmer. Twist it and make sure it's secure by pulling down. Start up the weed trimmer and make sure the replacement works.
