If you are a handy homeowner, you may want to install vinyl siding yourself. Knowing some of the tricks of the trade will help the process go smoothly, and ensure that your new siding has lasting appeal.

1. Choose high quality siding. Thicker doesn't necessarily mean better. Instead, look for fade-resistant colors, deeper profile siding (which looks more like wood than plastic), and rigidity.


2. Make sure that you install the siding on a flat and smooth surface. You can use furring strips or foam board insulation to make the exterior walls even.


3. Vinyl expands in the heat and contracts in the cold. For that reason, be sure to place the nails in the middle of the nail slots, leaving the thickness of a dime between the nail head and the siding. The siding should be able to slide freely.
