How to Replace a Diverter on a Tub & Shower Faucet

    • 1). Turn off the water supply for your bathtub. Newer homes might have a supply cut off valve for the bathtub in the bathroom somewhere, perhaps behind an access panel or in a cabinet. If you don't find a separate cut off valve, you will have to turn off the water for your entire house. The switch for this is usually located next to your water meter. Rotate the switch with a pair of pliers or wrench to turn off the water. Open the faucet to allow any water inside to run out.

    • 2). Determine how your tub faucet spout is attached. In the majority of cases, your tub spout will either be held in place with a hex screw, or twist onto the water supply pipe. If it is a hex screw type, place a rag over the bath drain or close the drain so you don't lose any parts inside. Unscrew the hex screw. Pull the spout off.

    • 3). For a twist off type, simply grab the faucet and turn counterclockwise. It may help to wrap the spout with a towel and then use a pair of pliers for a better grip.

    • 4). Slip the new spout and diverter into place over the end of the water supply valve. Insert the hex screw and tighten if present.

    • 5). Restore the water supply.
