How to Work a Weed Eater

    • 1). Check the length of the weed eater's nylon string. Replace or lengthen the string if it's too short; some models require you to replace each length of string, while others load a full spool that extends automatically if you tap the head on the ground. Keep the string length shorter than the length of the protective guard and make sure the unit's power is off before you put your hands near the nylon string.

    • 2). Check that the weed whacker has an energy source. Plug electric versions into a plug or battery and fill the tank of gas-powered models.

    • 3). Disengage the weed eater's dead-man or automatic shut-off switch. If you're using a gas-powered version, push the primer four or five times then engage the unit's choke or pulley to start the motor.

    • 4). Pull the weed eater's trigger to start rotating the nylon string. Position the cutting head so that the string can't hit any objects or people when it starts to turn.

    • 5). Hold the trimmer at approximately a 30-degree angle, which should bring the cutting head parallel to the ground. Move the cutting head in a sweeping motion, turning at the hips rather than using your arms to guide the unit.

    • 6). Remove your hand from the trigger to stop the string's rotation. Flip the shut-off switch back to the "off" position to kill the unit's motor.
