How to Replace the Trim Line on the Homelite Weed Eater

    • 1). Locate the spark plug wire on top of the Homelite trimmer engine. Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Place the trimmer on a sturdy work surface or on the ground while working.

    • 2). Turn the retainer on the bottom of the spool to the left to loosen and remove. Pull the trimmer line spool from the trimmer head. Keep the spring attached as you remove the spool so that you can note the proper placement when it's time for installation.

    • 3). Remove old trimmer line from the spool and discard. Cut two 9-foot lengths of .080-inch-diameter trimmer line with a pair of scissors.

    • 4). Insert the end of one 9-foot length into the hole in the top half of the trimmer spool. Wind the line onto the spool to the left, or counter clockwise. Leave 6 inches of trimmer line extending from the spool and clip it into the notch on the side of the spool so that the freed end of the line is extending up from the spool.

    • 5). Insert a free end of the second 9-foot length of trimmer line into the hole on the bottom half of the spool. Wind it securely to the left, or counter clockwise, and clip the free end into a different notch on the side of the spool so that 6 inches of the free end of the line extends upward.

    • 6). Place the spring correctly on the spool and thread the 6-inch free ends of the line through two separate holes in the trimmer head.

    • 7). Position the spool into the trimmer head. Turn the spool slightly to the left to lock it in place and secure the spool to the trimmer head with the retainer.
