The View En Route to the Volcanoes National Park
The Virunga Mountains are stunningly beautiful. This was our view en route from the Virunga Lodge to the park headquarters to go gorilla tracking... more below
The Virunga Mountains, are home to the largest remaining mountain gorilla population, around 480 (the other 400 mountain gorillas inhabit Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park). This chain of volcanoes run the length of Rwanda's border with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). They are absolutely gorgeous to look at and impressively high. There are more than eight major volcanoes, all of them over 3,000 meters.
Many have lovely lakes at their feet and as you can see, wonderful rings of cloud around their peaks.
