How to Replace the Fuel Line on a Weed Eater Trimmer

    • 1). Disconnect the spark plug lead from the spark plug by pulling on it.

    • 2). Drain all fuel from the weed eater's fuel tank into a storage container.

    • 3). Use a Philips-head screwdriver to remove screws holding the air filter cover in place.

    • 4). Lift off the air filter cover.

    • 5). Lift out the foam air filter and metal grille.

    • 6). Remove the carburetor bolts using a 5/32 hex key or wrench. Lift out the choke housing and leave the bolts in the housing.

    • 7). Using needle-nose pliers, carefully remove any remains of the fuel hose from the primer bulb nipples. Lift the choke housing away.

    • 8). Remove the carburetor from the throttle linkage. Gently pull the carburetor away from the motor. Note the direction and use caution not to tear the carburetor-engine gasket.

    • 9). Use needle-nose pliers to remove the fuel hose from the carburetor nipples. Remove the carburetor.

    • 10

Use scissors to cut the damaged fuel line above where it enters the fuel tank. If both fuel lines are damaged, cut each of them. Using a 16-gauge wire, press the remaining bits of fuel line into the tank. Turn the fuel tank toward the ground, holding your hand over the tank's opening. Shake out any loose parts.

    • 11

Cut the new large fuel line at a 45-degree angle. The large line is the fuel return line. Press the 16-gauge wire into the fuel line. Bend 1/4 inch of the wire, making a hook. Press the hook flat with needle-nose pliers.

    • 12

Thread the free end of the wire into the large fuel line hole in the fuel tank. Push the wire over to the opening where you would fill the tank with gas. Pull the free end of wire out of the opening with needle-nose pliers. Hand feed the fuel line until you have 2 inches coming out of the filler opening.

    • 13

Remove the 16-gauge wire from the fuel line and replace your 45-degree cut with a 90-degree cut.

    • 14

Attach the one-way valve to the fuel line extending from the filler opening. Pull the fuel line back into the tank about 4 inches.

    • 15

Repeat the process from Step 11 for the small fuel line. It is the fuel supply line. When you have 2 inches of line coming out of the fuel filler hole, attach the fuel filter. Pull back just enough line so the fuel filter will "flop around all inside the tank."

    • 16

Attach the small fuel hose to the long, straight nipple on the carburetor. Cut the fuel line to fit.

    • 17

Insert the throttle cable back into the large hole on the linkage with needle-nose pliers.

    • 18

Using a small piece of fuel line, attach it to the short, bent nipple on the carburetor. Attach the other end to the small nipple on the primer bulb.

    • 19

Attach the large fuel line from the tank to the large nipple on the primer bulb. Trim the line to fit.

    • 20

Align the screw on the choke housing with the carburetor and engine. Use the 5/32 hex key or wrench to tighten the screws.

    • 21

Replace the foam air filter and metal grille. Place the air filter cover on the air filter and tighten the screws with the Philips-head screwdriver.

    • 22

Fill the fuel tank with the manufacturer's recommended fuel-gas mixture. Pump the primer bulb and check for any fuel leaks.

    • 23

Start the weed eater according to the user's manual. Check for fuel leaks while the weed eater is running.
