What Kinds of Foods, Plants & Animals Represent Georgia?

    Live Oak

    • Georgia's state tree is the live oak. Live oaks are known for being shade trees and can have a canopy spread of about 150 feet, if given the space to grow freely. These trees have green leaves that are 2 inches to 5 inches long and are evergreen. They produce acorns, which makes these trees very popular to birds, squirrels and other small animals.

    Cherokee Rose

    • The Cherokee rose gets its name from the Cherokee Native Americans who once populated Georgia. Those Native Americans are responsible for growing the flower all over the state. Cherokee roses have one layer of petals and yellow centers. The bushes create masses of green leaves and are very thorny. These roses bloom in the early spring.

    Brown Thrasher

    • The brown thrasher was named Georgia's state bird in 1970. It is a long, narrow bird and is brown with white stripes on its breast. These birds often hide in brown thrushes, which help camouflage them from predators. They are related to cat birds and mockingbirds.

    Right Whale

    • The right whale is Georgia's state mammal. This rare whale is found in the Atlantic waters off Georgia's coast. It is large and black, with raised knobs on its head. Some right whales have light colored patches on their bellies. Right whales migrate to the waters near Georgia during the winter.

    Grits

    • Grits became Georgia's official state prepared food in 2002. The dish has long been a staple in many Southern states. It is made of ground corn or hominy and was originally made by Native Americans who lived in the South. Grits are often served for breakfast, with butter or cheese added to them. People also serve grits for lunch or dinner and pair them with shrimp, seafood or other items.

    Peach

    • Georgia is known for the peach, which is also one of the state's top agricultural industry. Georgia peaches are available for just 16 weeks every year, from mid-May through August. Most Georgia peaches are sold wholesale to grocery stores. Some are sold in roadside markets.
