What Makes a Refrigerator Smell?

    Checking for Spoiled Food

    • Regularly cleaning out the refrigerator and the freezer is the best way to prevent unpleasant odors from developing. Check drawers and crevices, which may be forgotten during routine cleaning.

    Problems

    • Rotting food causes the refrigerator to produce a bad smell, and the resulting bacteria, mildew, and mold may contribute to health problems, especially for those with asthma or other respiratory issues. Additionally, rotting food may affect the flavor of the unspoiled food within the refrigerator.

    Treatment

    • The first step in removing refrigerator odors is collecting and removing all the spoiled food. Immediately throw spoiled food into trash receptacles outdoors, as the smell may begin to affect the home if left indoors. Remove all the good food from the fridge, and store it in a cooler to protect perishables. Mix a solution of 1 part water and 1 part vinegar. Spray the entire refrigerator, including door hardware, shelves, and drawers with the solution, and wipe it out with paper towels. Before returning food to the refrigerator, place a box of baking soda inside. A natural deodorizer, baking soda helps remove any lingering smells.
