How to Become a Star in a Movie

    • 1). You don't have to go to Hollywood. It is still the hot spot of the movie business, along with New York City, but you don't have to go to either place to be discovered. Eventually, if you achieve your dream, you will probably find it more convenient to live in California or New York, but if you're not ready to take the plunge yet, you can pursue your dreams from where you are. You might also consider moving to budding movie centers like Atlanta or Chicago. Where you start your career is up to you. You'll probably end up on a coast sooner or later.

    • 2). Take acting lessons. You may believe you're the best actor or actress around, but an acting coach will teach you various techniques to help you expand your ability to handle different roles. In addition to acting lessons, you might consider singing, dancing or music lessons. Any extra talents you have go a long way on your resume.

    • 3). Assemble a portfolio. Include a variety of glossy photographs of yourself along with a bio and any performing credits you have. That includes high school acting jobs.

    • 4). Perform everywhere you can. Local theater is a good way to hone your acting skills. Join an acting group. This gives you a chance to work with peers and receive valuable critiques of your work.

    • 5). Have a friend who's good with a camera make a video of you acting. Use this as a calling card. Send the video, your bio and glossy prints of yourself to the major studios and agents. You can purchase the "Hollywood Agents and Manager's Directory" or "The Hollywood Creative Directory" in most bookstores. You want to put yourself in front of the people who make the movies. Agents will take about 10 percent of your earnings, but they have the power to open doors in Hollywood, so getting one should be an important part of your plans.

    • 6). Read "Variety" and other professional movie magazines. Keep your eyes open for movie casting calls. A casting call is where you simply go in and try out for a part. If you do this, make sure you're prepared to read straight from a script they hand you and to get into character immediately. There's no place for warming up when you read for a part.

    • 7). Immerse yourself in movies and acting. Watch movies, read scripts and be on the lookout for every opportunity that comes your way. Even a local commercial can be a way to break into the business. Jim Varney started in Laclede Gas commercials and became Ernest in the movies. If you're persistent and resilient, you stand a good chance of achieving your acting goals.
