Display your photo with a mat that matches its style. If your photo is formal or contemporary, stick to black-and-white mats. Natural photos should have natural-colored mats, like greens and browns. Fun photos can have bright colors, and romantic photos should have pastel colors. - 2

Compare colored mats that will either complement or contrast with the photo. When using a mat to contrast color, find the main color in the photo and choose shades on the opposite end of the color wheel.
