- Avoid acidic, spicy, greasy and fatty foods as these may aggravate heartburn. Tomatoes, peppers, chocolate, citrus fruits and juices, and caffeinated beverages can all be culprits.
- Try to eat several small meals throughout the day. Do not lie down right after eating, and eat your last meal at least 3 hours before you go to bed.
- Take a short walk after each meal to help speed up your digestion. If you don't feel like walking, make sure you sit upright in a comfortable chair and try to avoid slouching.
- Sleep with an extra pillow propping you up so that you do not lie flat throughout the night.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Try a glass of milk or warm milk with honey to soothe heartburn when it occurs.
