Blue Jean Purse Craft Directions

    • 1). Cut a leg from an old pair of jeans. Lay the pant leg flat on your work surface and trim the raw edges. This is the top of your blue jean purse. Measure 12 inches down from the top edge and mark with a marking pen. Place a dinner plate above the mark with the edge on the mark. Trace the edge of the dinner plate on the bottom edge of the purse. This will give the purse a rounded bottom. Cut the bottom of the purse along the line.

    • 2). Fold 1/3 yard of fabric into two layers, with the right sides together. Place the cut bluejean leg on the fabric and pin. Cut the fabric 1/4 inch larger on all sides of the jean leg. This is the lining of the purse. Cut four strips of fabric, 2 inches wide by 18 inches long, for the purse handles.

    • 3). Turn the cut bluejean purse wrong side out. Sew the bottom edges of the purse together, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Pin the lining pieces together with the right sides facing. Sew the sides and bottom, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Leave a 4-inch opening in the center of one side.

    • 4). Pin two handle pieces together with the right sides facing. Sew the two long edges, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Repeat for the other handle. Turn the handles right side out and iron. Top stitch each long edge of the handles 1/4 inch from the edges.

    • 5). Turn the bluejean purse right side out. Match the short ends of one handle, to the top edge on one side of the purse. Center and separate the handles 4 inches apart and pin. Note: The handles will be upside down on the purse and pinned to the top edge until they are attached. Turn the purse over and pin the other handle in the same way.

    • 6). Place the right-side-out jean purse inside the wrong-side-out lining. Match the top edges with the handles sandwiched between the purse and lining. Pin the top edge of the purse to the top edge of the lining. Sew around the purse top, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

    • 7). Turn the purse right side out through the opening in the side seam of the lining. Hand sew the opening closed. Iron the purse. Top stitch around the top edge of the purse 1/4-inch from the edge.
