How to Make a Ripple Stitch Crochet Afghan

    Crochet the Panels

    • 1). Work 47 chain stitches. Work one double crochet stitch in the fourth chain from the hook and one double crochet in each of the next two chain stitches. Skip one chain stitch. *Work one double crochet stitch in each of the next five chain stitches. Work one double crochet stitch, two chain stitches and one double crochet stitch (V-stitch) in the next chain stitch. Work one double crochet stitch in each of the next five chain stitches. Skip two chain stitches. Repeat from the asterisk (*) to the last five stitches. Skip one chain stitch. Work one double crochet in each of the last four chain stitches.

    • 2). Chain three stitches (counts as one double crochet stitch). Work one double crochet in each of the first three double crochet stitches. Skip one double crochet stitch. *Double crochet in each of the next five stitches. Make a V-stitch in the space of the V-stitch of the last row. Double crochet in each of the next five stitches. Skip two double crochet stitches. Repeat from the asterisk to the last five stitches. Skip one double crochet stitch. Double crochet in each of the last four stitches.

    • 3). Repeat the last row until the panel measures 60 inches from the beginning. Cut the yarn, leaving a 2- to 3-inch tail. Pull the tail through the loop on your hook to end.

    • 4). Make four more panels to match.

    Assemble the Afghan

    • 1). Thread the tapestry needle with yarn to match the afghan.

    • 2). Lay two panels side by side, matching the rows to each other.

    • 3). Pull the needle up through the first edge stitch of one panel, leaving a 2- to 3-inch tail of yarn to weave in later. Bring the needle down through the first edge stitch of the opposite panel, pulling the stitch just tight enough to butt the two panels against each other.

    • 4). Stitch back-and-forth between the two panels, keeping the tension even and the edges butted against each other. When you reach the end of the yarn, weave it into your work, rethread your needle and continue to the end. Weave the last 2 to 3 inches of yarn through your work and trim it close to the stitches.

    • 5). Join the remaining panels in the same way. Thread any loose ends of yarn through the tapestry needle and weave them into your work to hide the ends.
