Castle & Dragon Cake Decorating Ideas
- It's easy to make a sheet cake and either cut it out in the shape of a dragon or purchase a dragon-shaped cake mold. Popular colors for dragons are green or red, and you can add gumdrop candies for scales and texture. Cover a cardboard rectangle with aluminum foil and use royal icing or decorator's icing to make bricks. Place the dragon cake on the castle board.
Another easy style of cake is an action figure cake. You can make a plain sheet cake in a castle-shaped mold or even a pyramid mold, then frost grey or brown to serve as a castle. Purchase small action figures from a toy shop or other boutique to serve as medieval knights and purchase one or more small dragon figures. You should be able to find figures like this online or at a speciality toy shop. Be sure to warn guests that the figures are not edible. - Make a sheet cake and cover it with gray icing to resemble a castle. You can make bricks on the castle (see Simple Dragon Cake), or use a piping bag with a round tip to add textured rocks to the castle. Next, prepare a recipe for rice cereal/marshmallow treats. While the treats are cooling, mold them into a long S-shape that will serve as the body of the dragon. Mold four rectangles for legs. Place the hardened treats on the cake castle, and attach the rectangles at four points, two per side, to serve as legs. Use another colored icing to cover the S and the legs with frosting and pipe long spikes to serve as scales on the dragon's back.
- Like the Simple Dragon Cake, the 3-D cake is displayed on a foil circle to emulate a castle. This cake can be made using two cake rounds that are cut and frosted together to resemble a dragon. The 3-D cake can be decorated using mints for scales, a fruit "leather" for the tongue, marshmallows for eyes and gumdrops for claws. The Dragon Cake Recipe has detailed instructions on how to cut and assemble the cake.
If you want to focus on the castle, you can make a great layered castle using a sheet cake and ice cream cones. Both sugar and wafer-style cones will work great. Purchase a small dragon action figure from a toy store and place the dragon on the castle cake. For added effect, purchase some knight figures to chase the dragon.
